Online Holiday Shopping Tips

It is officially the Holiday Season, and with that comes shopping. Make sure to stay safe with these online holiday shopping tips!
1. Shop at websites you trust
Every year people spend more time and money shopping online. It is very convenient, but equally as attractive to scammers. If you find a deal that sounds too good to be true, chances are it is. Shopping at websites that you trust and/or have shopped with before is your best bet.
2. Be careful using public Wi-Fi
With a little tech know-how, someone could intercept what you’re looking at while using public Wi-Fi. This leaves the door open to grabbing your name and credit card info while shopping online.
3. Check out website security
Check for the lock icon, and https (rather than just http) in the url of the website. If you don’t see that lock or the “s” after “http,” then the webpage isn’t secure.

4. Watch out for email scams
People often spend much more around the holidays, and that means scammers are trying to get a piece of the action. Clicking on links in emails from unknown senders could infect your computer with viruses or malware. Play it safe and delete anything from a person or business you are unfamiliar with.
5. Don’t give out too much information
No legitimate shopping website will ever need your Social Security number. If you are asked for very personal details your best bet is to use a website you are familiar with or have done business with before.
6. Pay with a credit card
Most major credit cards offer $0 liability for fraudulent purchases – giving you the best liability protection for online purchases. If you only have a debit card, just make sure to pay attention to, and report anything you think is fraudulent. If you wait too long you may not be reimbursed.
Holiday shopping can be stressful, but if you follow these tips you can relieve some of that stress. Good luck and have fun!
