How to Start a Facebook Messenger Room Video Chat

Updated: May 21

Facebook has come out with its own video conferencing option, called Messenger Rooms. This is a simpler, but free option to video chat apps like Teams, Zoom or Google Meet. Its supports up to 50 users at the same time and is integrated into Facebook Messenger.

Video conferencing has become a very normal everyday work and socializing tool, and this is one more you can use on phones, computers or tablets. Messenger Rooms may be easier for you to use, however. Below are instructions on getting started.

iOS/Android

  • Open the Messenger app

  • Click the “People” button

  • Click “Create a Room.”

  • Click “Invite with a link”

  • To invite others, click “Share link.” You can select the contacts you want to invite to the room. You can also set if up for people who do not have a Facebook account.

On desktop

  • Open Messenger either by going to Facebook or messenger.com.

  • Click the “Start New Room” camera icon at the top of left-hand menu.

  • A new window will pop up. Click “Continue as [your name]” to start a room.

  • To invite others, copy, paste, and send the URL at the top of the Room window to anyone you want to invite.

Facebook Messenger Rooms is a new easy way to video chat on a platform many are already used to. This may be the tool to best suit your video conferencing needs. While it is more limited than Microsoft Teams or Zoom, it is still a tool that can help you professionally or personally. We expect more features to come.
